Project Goals
The Graph Art Project is a collaboration between 9th grade Art, Language Art and Math Instructors. Students learn about art history, visually and mathematically analyze an artwork of their choice, and create artworks of their own including a poem and a graphic art piece that bring historical artworks into the future.
In Math students use Desmos to to write and graph equations for parabolas, absolute values and linear equations. Honors Math students were additionally challenged to write equations for exponential and circular equations.
In Art students researched different time periods, selected an inspirational piece to study further and used it as a basis for their math analysis. They referenced contemporary artist David Hockney's most recent iPad paintings as a source of inspiration. Using GIMP - an open-source software - they reinterpreted the piece digitally.
In Language Arts students wrote poems inspired by their selected artists and their work.
