Welcome to Art I!

I am looking forward to a year full of creative drawing, painting, graphic and 3D Design. This year will begin with drawing essentials and creative mark making. From there we will explore mixed media/ painting and printmaking followed by graphic design. We will wrap up the year with 3D design. Many of the projects will be connected with content you are investigating in other classes and will allow you to deepen your understanding and responding to the curriculum.

The Art curricula is structured around three Big Ideas:

Personal Expression : Students develop and share original ideas. Students explore and nurture their own creativity through experimentation with materials and multiple media and, exposure to historical and contemporary art and artists. Students contribute original ideas to our community and culture.

Visual Literacy : is all about understanding what you see.

Students gain knowledge and skills to effectively articulate their ideas. Students employ principles and elements of design (visual elements, design and composition principles, visual effects). Students utilize new and available technologies.

Design Process Thinking: Students learn to think like designers to solve problems and develop innovative solutions and ideas. Students employ design process strategies (Discover, Understand/Define, Interpret, Ideate/Brainstorm, Prototype, Experiment/Test & Refine).

COMPENTENCY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

Embedded within lesson and unit goals and objectives, the course utilizes the National Standards for Arts Education, as well as Ohio Visual Arts Content Standards.

Studio Habits of Mind:

Develop Craft: Learning to use tools, materials, artistic conventions; and learning to care for tools, materials, and space. Engage & Persist: Learning to embrace problems of relevance within the art world and/or of personal importance, to develop focus conducive to working and persevering at tasks. Envision: Learning to picture mentally what cannot be directly observed, and imagine possible next steps in making a piece. Express: Learning to create works that convey an idea, a feeling, or a personal meaning. Observe: Learning to attend to visual contexts more closely than ordinary “looking” requires, and thereby to see things that otherwise might not be seen. Reflect: Learning to think and talk with others about an aspect of one’s work or working process, and learning to judge one’s own work and working process and the work of others. Stretch & Explore: Learning to reach beyond one’s capacities, to explore playfully without a preconceived plan, and to embrace the opportunity to learn from mistakes. Understand (Arts) Community: Learning to interact as an artist with other artists (i.e., in classrooms, in local arts organizations, and across the art field) and within the broader society.

Assignments and Grading

This is a process oriented class in which students will be evaluated primarily through projects and related materials including:

Sketches /Drafts,

Achievement of Goals and Skill,

Quality Craftsmanship,

Effort / Personal Progress / Self Reflection,

Peer Critique, and Presentations of Work.

  • Assignments along with related presentation materials, models, work samples, due dates and assessment rubrics are posted on the class website and linked in Schoology.

  • All course assignments must be completed and submitted for a grade consideration for the class.

  • Assignments submitted after the posted due dates are subject to point deductions, and, work will only be accepted one day after it is due unless pre-approved with a work contract between student and instructor. All work from excused absences may be made up for full credit with equal number of absent days added to the due date. Students are responsible for keeping up with current assignments regardless of make-up work.

  • Partner and group projects will receive a group grade when members of the team work collaboratively.

Assignment: Students will need to bring a sketchbook (preferably 9"x12", wire bound with 50+ pages). The soft bindings tend to drop pages. (deadlines are always posted in bold):

Sketchbook to class by Wednesday August 24.

Blog

The class blog will feature assignments, links and other relevant materials necessary to complete assignments. Links will be located on Schoology.

Please note:

I will post assignments on this website including deadlines and sometimes links or related course materials. Projects for the class often last for more than one day, and so that post may cover an extended period of time - in other words, I do not always post an assignment every day. I do review new assignments in class and students are responsible for managing their work and meeting deadlines. If you are absent it is your responsibility to visit this site to review any new material you may have missed. This website and assignment posts can be accessed via the link on Schoology.

You can download a copy of the syllabus for this class here.

Name tags: tell me about yourself through your design of a name tag.

2. Sketch your design - then develop images that form or decorate the letters of your name. You can use printed font to trace as a base or draw your own.

3. Use your choice of media to add color, texture and pattern.

4. Make sure I can clearly see the spelling of your name!
