In your sketchbook, title a page "Positive + Negative space". Write down a definition for each.
2. Complete the handout and tape into your sketchbook.
You can also use space as another technique for accurate drawing. Seeing the negative space as shapes and gauging them in relation to each other can improve the proportions and accuracy of your drawing.

3. Draw a Real Three-Dimensional stool.
The goal of learning to “see” and record negative space is to improve your drawing skills of three-dimensional objects in the real world. Perception of negative space will allow you to draw anything. On the next page of your sketchbook, cover the page in a light coat of vine charcoal or heavy graphite. Carefully observe the object provided to you in class. Use an eraser to draw the negative space around and between parts of the object. Remember, draw ONLY the negative spaces around and within the object, not the object itself!
