     “Same People, Different Stereotypes”

R.D, C.C. and G.A

Stereotypes of African Americans are as present today as they were in the 1800’s, the time of Jim Crow. While the labels may have changed over time, African Americans are still suffering from negative racial stereotypes today.

In this piece Jim Crow is represented as a black man with over-emphasized qualities.  He is seen as extremely under educated, very corny and emphasized heavily that he was a Negro.  Often perceived as thuggish and under educated  African Americans – particularly young men have been pegged as drug addicts and dealers. Other pervasive stereotypes have included a love for fried chicken, watermelon and Kool-Aid.  Many of these negative stereotypes still exist today and harmful to all of society. Society needs to change and stop labeling African Americans as under educated criminals and start looking at people as individuals.  People don’t even realize they are stereotyping others most of the time. Being conscious is one of the best ways to prevent it.
