Breaking the Glass Ceiling

Lizzy Brown and Marinna Gorby

Since World War II, women have been actively working to break “the glass ceiling.” When many men went off to fight in the war, they left jobs open for women to fill. This gave them importance in society, and when the men returned for their jobs, women were reluctant to give up this new freedom and independence. Since then, the pay gap has slowly been closing as women gain more and more education and opportunity. However, women currently make about 80 cents to the dollar that a man makes, which is about 20 cents more than back in the war. According to the American Association of University Women (AAUW) , even though the rate of pay for women compared to men has improved over the years, it is still estimated that women will not reach pay equity with men until 2052.
