Pro-Life vs. Pro-Choice

This piece is created by DRSS ninth grade students Jessica Saine, Holli Reynolds, Danny Rich and Jordan Benoit. The purpose of this piece is to see the Experience of Women throughout history by describing two events that relate to each other. One of the events happened in the past and has been solved and the other is a contemporary event that is still going on today. My group made a silhouette piece about the National Women’s Conference and the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade. These events are related because the National Women’s Conference brought up issues that they wanted solutions to. Abortion was one of the most argued about topics because of people’s pro-life and pro-choice opinions.

Before the National Women’s Conference abortion had been made legal in 1972, just five years before the conference, yet people still felt strongly about that topic. The Roe vs. Wade anniversary is the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision that made abortion in the United States legal again due to one woman who had been raped and wanted an abortion. In Washington, on the 40th anniversary, people of both sides of the argument protested abortion. These events both show how even though it’s been many years, people are still debating about the same topic.

The topic on abortion has never really changed due to different people’s opinions. There are always going to be people who have strong feelings for one side or the other. There were protests in the 1960’s and there are still protests today. What has changed is people still protest about abortion now but they do it less often. It usually is not an issue but in recent years there have been people who wanted to close down Planned Parenthood to get rid of abortion.

To make this piece, we created silhouettes of women arguing about abortion and putting the Washington DC and Texas flags behind them. The woman in the middle has a question written on her body, making her the focal point. On one side of her, there are arguments about abortion, from the 60’s and early 70’s and then on the opposite side there are arguments from today. This piece shows the tension between the two sides and how in the past and present people are still arguing about the same topic. By using positive and negative space it will emphasize the women in the piece. The image of the women in the middle is the biggest one and the wavy lines of the flag will draw your attention to the woman in the middle. We used repetition of the women on each sides. Also creating a balance by having three on each side and two flags joining in the middle. This piece is very symmetrical but you can tell which side is which by looking at it.

There has been some change however, people have been protesting less often than they used to and protests are less violent. People should be more tolerant of others opinions and should not result things with violence. In the end, it is the women’s choice whether or not she gets an abortion. If you disagree with someone’s opinions you should try to listen no matter how strong your own opinion is.
